A new system to improve the experience of people with eye conditions is already proving a great success as it hits a significant milestone.
Since the Electronic Eye Referral System (EeRS) launched at the end of last year, two thirds of optometry practices across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin have already referred over 1000 patients.
EeRS is a secure digital platform that enables optometrists to access advice and guidance from hospital eye care specialists and refer patients electronically for eye conditions that require further investigation or treatment.
Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin was the first area to launch the new system, as part of an NHS Midlands led regional implementation programme, which aims to improve the referral process, enabling information to be shared more easily and support better communication between the different services.
EeRS brings faster and more convenient referrals, the ability to attach documents and images to the referral, reduced burden on GP practice staff who currently process referrals from optometrists, improved communication between primary and secondary care, and enhanced patient safety and quality of care.
