Local people helping to shape eye care

The views and experiences of local people are being used to help shape the future of eye care services in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.

Earlier this year, the NHS embarked on a programme of work to transform local eye care services. 

The aim is to provide effective eye care services that are more joined up so that adults and children get the best care possible when and where they need it.

Barrie Reis-Seymour, Head of Transformation and System Commissioning, said: “It is important that the programme is shaped by the experiences and views of our patients, communities, and service providers.  So, earlier this year we ran several engagement activities that enabled us to capture valuable insight, including a public survey, community outreach and a series of workshops. 

“Whilst most people told us that they had had a good experience of our services, we also heard about areas that could be improved.”

Feedback from patients showed that they value the level of care and choice, they appreciate the good links between local opticians and the hospitals, and they feel well informed about their eye conditions.

People also suggested that services could be more joined-up, there could be better links to other services such as mental health and support in the community, and the referral process could be improved.

Barrie, continued: “I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to talk to us and share their views and experiences – all of this rich insight will help us design a model that best meets the needs and wishes of our population.” 

The programme team is now using all the learning gathered to design the future model and will be seeking further feedback on any proposed changes later this year.
