ICB Chair to retire after more than five decades in the NHS

The Chair of NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, Sir Neil McKay has today announced his decision to retire later this summer.

Sir Neil has dedicated over 50 years to the NHS, with a notable career in management and leadership. Prior to his time as Chair of the Integrated Care Board (ICB), his previous roles have included Chair of the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Sustainable Transformation Partnership, CEO of University Hospitals in Sheffield and Leeds, CEO for two Strategic Health Authorities and Chief Operating Officer for the Department of Health.

Commenting on his retirement, Sir Neil McKay said: “It has been an absolute privilege and a pleasure to be the Chair of this organisation since it was established on 1 July 2022.

“I have given considerable thought to this decision over recent months and now, as we see in a new Government and the organisation embarks on the implementation of a new operating model, after 54 years of working for the NHS, I feel the time is right to take my retirement and hand over the reins.

“The two-year tenure as Chair has been a highlight of my career and I have had the honour of working alongside so many talented and passionate people who are committed to serving the residents of Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.”

Simon Whitehouse, Chief Executive of NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, said: “On behalf of our Integrated Care System, I want to thank Neil for his unwavering commitment and significant contribution to the organisation and wider system.

“His passion for delivering better health and care through integration and strong partnership working has been integral to the ongoing development of our health and care system and will leave a lasting legacy.

“Neil will be greatly missed, and we wish him the very best in his retirement.”

The precise date for Sir Neil to stand down has not yet been determined and arrangements for replacing him will be announced soon.
