More people with learning disabilities are getting their annual health checks 

GP practices in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin have exceeded national targets for the Learning Disability Annual Health Check (LDAHC).  

The NHS Long Term Plan1 commits to improve uptake of the annual health check in primary care for people aged over 14 years old with a learning disability, so that at least 75% of those eligible have a LDAHC each year.  

Data for the 2022 to 2023 financial year, shows that practices in the county have surpassed the national target by completing 77% of LDAHCs for people on the Learning Disability register.  

Practices completed a total of 1956 LDAHCs compared to 1577 in 2021/22, with 27 practices achieving over 80% and 7 achieving 98% or 100%. Learning Disability registers have also continued to grow during 2022/23 from 2441 in April 2022 to 2556 in March 2023.   

The Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust is commissioned to continue to support practices with this work through cleansing registers, contacting patients, and providing home visits and follow ups.   

The 2023/24 LDAHC Improvement Plan is currently being finalised with key actions to continue to improve local data and the quality of LDAHCs.
