Lingen Davies Cancer Trust working to produce multi lingual videos to help local residents access breast, bowel and cervical screening

13 December 2022

The Lingen Davies Cancer Trust have produced a series of multi lingual videos, providing residents of Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin with clear and simple messages related to cancer screening.

The videos will launch in the new year, and will cover cancer signs, symptoms and information about how to access local screening services for breast, bowel and cervical screening.

In partnership with local translation agencies and created by the Lingen Davies health champions, they will be made available for use in GP practices, secondary care and on social media platforms in several languages including Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Polish, Mandarin and Punjabi.

NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin commissioned Lingen Davies Cancer Trust to work with ethnically diverse communities to investigate and address the issues and barriers that can lead to lower uptakes of cancer screening services. This project has enabled the building of relationships within BAME communities in Telford, and the recruitment of cancer health champions to support ongoing cancer promotion within these areas.

Local data shows that 1 year survival is often lower for Telford and Wrekin patients with breast cancer, and that the numbers of patients with ovarian cancer is high. Our healthcare organisations have identified a clear need to address the low uptake of cancer screening services, particularly within BAME communities, and are actively working with these groups to identify barriers and increase uptake through education.

To accompany this, Lingen Davies have also launched a website to help local residents who may be interested to become a Cancer Champion, and help keep Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin talking about cancer. This website is accessible at https://www.cancerchampions.co.uk/
